For those who love nature, breathtaking views and perhaps a bit 'of trekking, it is certainly advisable to visit aCavagrande del Cassibile. It is a nature reserve, over 2700 hectares wide and that is centered around the suggestive canyon formed by the Cassibile river. This natural quarry is about 10 km long and surrounded by steep rock walls, high in some points up to 300 m. Cavagrande is located a few kilometers from the town of Avola, south of Syracuse and the main access point is the road that leads to ancient Avola, destroyed by the earthquake of 1693. Even without wishing to undertake long excursions in nature it will be possible to enjoy wonderful panoramic views that span the province of Syracuse, to get to the sea or look out over the steep walls of the quarry to observe from above the small ponds and sinuous lines of the river Cassibile. The nature reserve is rich in vegetation. In spring it is wonderfully dotted with colorful flowers including many spontaneous orchids. During the hot months, however, a bath in the lakes is a pleasant refreshment. The area also has several archaeological remains such as the suggestive "Grotta dei Briganti", used in past centuries or the prehistoric necropolis of Cassibile, at the mouth of the quarry. There are many paths of varying degrees of difficulty to visit Cavagrande. For occasional visitors, however, we suggest you opt for the panoramic "Scala cruci" path that leads down from the belvedere to the lakes.
Per quanti amano la natura, i panorami mozzafiato e, magari un po' di trekking, è sicuramente consigliabile una visita aCavagrande del Cassibile. Si tratta di una riserva naturale, vasta oltre 2700 ettari e che è incentrata intorno al suggestivo canyon formato dal fiume Cassibile. Questa cava naturale è lunga circa 10 Km e circondata da scoscese pareti di roccia, alte in alcuni punti fino a 300 m. Cavagrande si trova a pochi chilometri dalla cittadina di Avola, a sud di Siracusa e il principale punto di accesso è la strada che sale verso Avola antica, distrutta dal terremoto del 1693.
Anche senza voler intraprendere lunghe escursioni in natura sarà possibile godere di meraviglioseviste panoramiche che spaziano sulla provincia di Siracusa, per arrivare fino al mare oppure affacciarsi alle ripide pareti della cava per osservare dall'alto i piccoli laghetti e le linee sinuose del fiume Cassibile. La riserva naturale è ricca di vegetazione. In primavera è meravigliosamente punteggiata di fiori colorati tra cui tante orchidee spontanee. Durante i mesi caldi, invece, un bagno nei laghetti costituisce un piacevole refrigerio. L'area ha anche diversi resti archeologici come la suggestiva "Grotta dei Briganti", utilizzata nei secoli passati o la necropoli preistorica del Cassibile, allo sbocco della cava. Esistono numerosi sentieri dai diversi gradi di difficoltà per visitare Cavagrande. Al visitatore occasionale suggeriamo però di optare per il panoramico sentiero "Scala cruci" che dal belvedere scende fino ai laghetti.
